Help! I need a new hairdresser, how do I choose?

We have all been there, the bad haircut!  Choosing a new hairdresser can be complicated.  Our top tips are as follows-

Ask around.  If you see someone in the street and you like their hair ask them where they go.

Before you book for the big appointments, cutting or technical services, visit the salon for a treatment and blow dry.  This allows you to get a feel for the environment without commitment.  Do you like the surroundings?  Did you like the stylist and were you happy with your hair?  If not try somewhere else until you are satisfied.

If you were happy with your service and you want to return book in for a consultation.  This gives you and the stylist time to discuss the options you have in mind.  This also allows the stylist to book the correct length of time for your appointment and to conduct any tests that may be necessary.

Chances are that the stylist you have chosen will be busy.  A good hairdresser will always be in demand.  If you can't get an appointment as soon as you would like, wait! It will be worth it.  They are busy for a reason.

Finally, good hairdressers are expensive. Chances are they have trained for years, they are still training.  It takes time and money to keep up with the latest industry developments and their time is valuable.  If you love your hair its money well spent.

A cliche but true, your hair is your most important outfit!

Sophia Hilton-Not Another Academy

When NEON Salon & School was launched in January 2016 we made a promise to offer high quality training focusing on relevant practical skills.  Alongside our in house NVQ courses we hoped to offer access to external trainers who could bring something new to Jersey, something that we wouldn't normally have access to without a lengthy commute!  Enter Sophia Hilton and her sidekick Carla Rinaldi from 'Not Another Salon/Academy' on London's Brick Lane.

For the past two days NEON staff, students and local employers have attended the exclusive 100% Freehand Balayage & Perfect Bleed courses run by Sophia & Carla. In the event that you haven't heard of them (seriously) just type their names into google.  Sophia has won some (read lots) of serious industry awards, is famous for her flawless colour work and is the owner of 'Not Another Salon'.  Carla is the salon Manager, her colour knowledge is insane and her hidden rainbow went viral, another one for google.

Both days followed a similar plan, model presentations by Sophia & Carla in the morning and student practice in the afternoon.  On the first day we learnt new techniques for ombre & balayage, specific to 'Not Another Academy' and the second day we learnt the signature 'bleed'. Not as easy as it looks.  Sophia & Carla were tough educators, making sure we perfected our technique, keeping our balayage tidy and leaving no bleed unblended!  They taught us the importance of educating our clients, setting realistic expectations and how each look works commercially.

To say the past two days have been inspiring would be an understatement, the knowledge gained has been invaluable.  Everyone left each course excited, motivated and focused on how they were going to use the techniques in their own salons. Excited about how they could translate the looks for their clients.  As far as hairdressing courses go this is up there with the best arguably the most fun, and messy! NEON now has bright colour splashed up the walls and all over the floor but we like it, it feels like Sophia & Carla are rebels in the 'safe' colouring world and they have definitely left their 'Not Another Academy' mark in Jersey. We might just start rebelling also. Watch this space!

* NEON Salon & School would just like to thank everyone who attended, with your support we hope to offer access to other external educators giving hairdressers the opportunity to attend advanced training normally only available off island.  Thank you to Nikki at Salon Essentials Ci and Innoluxe for sponsoring the day, to Suzannah at Avanti for meeting my many demands, to our seriously good models, all sixteen of you!  Finally, a huge thank you to Sophia, Carla and your glamorous assistant Juliette, we loved it!

See you soon x

2016

The end of a year usually brings reflection of some sort and when we look back at Neon in 2016 it's quite amazing how far we have come. NEON Hair & Beauty School was launched, apprehensively, on January 1st 2016.  Apprehensively because we were unsure how a new style of training would be perceived, we initially though we might have a couple of students on our courses we never imagined our courses would be full with a waiting list!

The start of the year was focused on planning, making sure our hairdressing courses were robust and fit for purpose with a strong emphasis on practical training.  With lots of experience in teaching and learning this was fairly straightforward, endless paperwork but nothing we couldn't handle!  Finding premises was more of a challenge but Toni & Guy Jersey very kindly allowed us to use a floor in their salon.  This allowed us to "test the water" and while it was great to be able to use a working salon we quickly outgrew our first home.

The creation of our website, marketing our courses and everything in between has been dealt with in-house and one of the biggest challenges has been finding enough hours in the day to get everything done.  There are many, many late nights behind the scenes but in order to offer a high quality training provision this is necessary.  A personal assistant would be nice but we are not quite there yet.......

We welcomed our first students in August, all 17 of them, and they have embraced a new style of training.  They produce consistently good work, achieve excellent results in their exams, are genuinely passionate about the industry and above all are an absolute delight to teach. I hope they would agree that their time at NEON is fun but more importantly that they are constantly learning and advancing their techniques.

In September we opened our doors to the public, offering high quality services at reduced rates.  Developing a loyal clientele is a priority for us as our students need to practice their skills.  We place huge importance on the customer experience and we have gained a loyal following.  Many of our sessions are fully booked and our clients regularly give us excellent feedback, we are always delighted when we receive 5 star reviews.

October was a busy month, we attended Salon International our main industry trade show. This is a key date  for any Hairdresser who wants to keep up with industry developments.  We crammed shows, meetings and equipment updates (shopping!) into two very full days.  As always we came back with lots of new tips, techniques and updates to pass onto our students.  A key trend for 2017, UV NEON hair!

October also saw us working with our friend Garry from The Great British Barber Bash.  We were delighted to bring Darren Jones over, not only is he an amazing (seriously good) barber but he is also an inspiring and talented trainer.  Feedback from industry professionals suggested this day was a success!  We look forward to working with him again next year.

November was our busiest month to date.  We looked after lots of clients which in turn meant we completed lots of important assessments.  Our awarding body completed their first inspection visit and we were delighted to receive an excellent report. We know we are offering quality training but it was good to have this confirmed. At the end of November our school closed for a month as our students are needed in their salons.  Christmas is a busy time and our salon partners need the help of their apprentices, this is also really valuable industry experience.  We also found our new premises this month, 21 David Place,  formally a pharmacy and perfumery for over 100 years. A perfumery that held a royal warrant, perfect for us!

At the time of writing, 30th December 2016, our new premises is a building site! We open our doors again on the 9th January and we are optimistic that everything will be finished, at this stage what's a few more late nights? We need to be in our new premises as we have lots of plans for 2017 and can't wait to get started.  If you haven't been to visit us yet we hope to see you next year and keep an eye on our Facebook/instagram for updates.

We wish you a Happy/Healthy New Year from all at Neon Salon & School x

Feelunique.com #beautyconnectexperts

Team Neon had another day in front of the camera. Day two of an exciting photo shoot for the all round awesome feelunique.com.  If we are honest its not a place we are comfortable, we much prefer being behind the scenes but we are delighted to be working with feelunique again so we had to suck it up (and in!).

The purpose of the shoot was to create images for Beauty Connect Expert, a new interactive section on the website.  Victoria from Team Neon is delighted to be working on this project as hair expert and we also have experts in make-up, nails, skincare and mens grooming.  We all know that feelunique.com is the go to website for just about every beauty product, team this with an expert for a completely new shopping experience.  See below for behind the scenes.

Beauty Connect Expert launches next month and if you want to follow us use the hash tag #beautyconnectexperts

Looking forward to sharing with you all soon.

GCFE Annual Hair & Make-Up Competition

What a night!

Team Neon were recently invited to Judge the GCFE Hair & Make Up Show alongside Faculty Director Jeanette Hart, and didn't we have a tough job!  The competition is a huge event in Guernsey and learners spend months preparing for the big day.  Every year they are given a theme to support their planning and this year it was Spectrum.  They choose a model, make costumes, choreograph a routine all alongside many hours spent researching and practicing weird and wonderful hair and make-up ideas.  This year was no different.  Standards were high, judging was not an easy task!

We had seven different hair and make-up competitions to judge and we found it so difficult we had to ask for extra time on a number of occasions. Right up until the models came on stage we were still deliberating.  After much discussion we were finally happy with our choices, finally!

The event is held at the impressive Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts and is a key date in the diary for local salons,  selling out every year in under 20 minutes!  It is a great opportunity for salon professionals to meet, socialise and discuss key developments within our exciting and creative industry.

Alongside the hair and make-up competitions there were presentations from the performing arts students, a local dance group and the final awards ceremony.  It was clear from the noise of the crowd that a great night was had by all.  We were honoured to be asked to attend and judge this prestigious event and to share in the success of some very talented learners.  A huge well done to everyone involved!

P.S A big congratulations to all those behind the scenes, you know who you are and if you are reading this thank you for the amazing Ben Le Prevost chocolates.  They look too good to eat..............almost!

MAKE UP By Nanda

Team Neon were delighted to attend the launch event for MAKE UP by Nanda this weekend at her purpose built studio in St Helier.

For those of you who don't know who Nanda Fernandes is (seriously? Everyone knows Nanda!) let us tell you more.  She has worked as a make up artist for various high profile brands over the years but most recently she was the Manager for MAC in Voisins where her creative skills were in high demand.  Looking to take her career in a slightly different direction Nanda decided to launch her own business and is now a freelance make up artist working on location and also from her own purpose built studio.

The launch event for MAKE UP by Nanda gave attendees the chance to look around her studio (and her amazing kit!) while enjoying some bubbles.  Nanda also did a make up demonstration and held a Q&A session answering lots of questions from her audience.  To finish the evening guests left with a goodie bag filled with lovely make up and details of the many services on offer.  Team Neon are booking in for the Genius Contouring & Strobing session very soon!

We have worked on many projects with Nanda over the years and she is always the ultimate professional.  We consider her a good friend and we know that with her knowledge and skills she is going to be very successful.   To see for yourself bookings can be made by calling 07797818724 or email nanda@makeup.je.

Good luck Nanda!
